About Øy Atelier

Øy Atelier is where saltwater dreams meet Scandinavian simplicity. We create surf-inspired, bohemian minimalist clothing and handcrafted silver jewellery—ethically made in Bali and designed to be lived in, loved, and passed on.

Family-run and fully independent, we design timeless wardrobe staples rooted in island living, slow fashion values, and conscious craftsmanship. Founded in 2018 by Norwegian sisters Margrethe and Solveig Jacobsen Rosvoll, together with their mother, Anne—Øy reflects three generations of creativity, from their grandmother’s handcrafted traditions to their own surf-inspired designs.

In Norwegian, Øy means “island”—a name shaped by our childhood. We grew up by the sea, spending every summer on small Norwegian islands. Our father, a fisherman, would take us out at sunrise, navigating his boat between the skerries to drop us off at the island of our choice. We spent our days diving through kelp forests, exploring wild beaches, and weaving stories beneath windswept trees—surrounded by goats, sea salt, and the quiet rhythm of ocean life.

While summer pulled us outside to explore islands and salt-soaked coastlines, the Norwegian winter invited us inward—into slower rhythms, quiet rituals, and the warmth of making. Raised in a creative family, we painted, sewed, crocheted, and made jewellery alongside our mother, grandmother, and brother. The atelier was always there—even before it had a name. That childhood love for creativity and coastal living gradually evolved into something more. When we moved to Bali in 2018 to begin our first collection, Øy Atelier came to life—our island studio for intuitive design, small-batch production, and a lifestyle shaped by surf, sun, and simplicity.

We grew up on salt-kissed islands, shaped by surf and stillness, making things slowly with our hands—just like our mother and grandmother did. Øy is more than a brand; it’s a way of life weaved together from a deep love for the sea.

Inspired by coastal adventures, Nordic landscapes, and the quiet poetry of everyday adventures, Øy is for those who live barefoot, feel deeply, and dress with a quiet sense of freedom. From sun-warmed surf checks in Bali to myth-woven fjords in Norway, this is artisan-made fashion for surfers, coastal bohemians and creative people. Whether chosen as a meaningful gift or worn through life’s adventures, every Øy piece carries a sense of soul, timelessness, and connection. Our aesthetic blends Scandinavian silhouettes, vintage surfwear influences, and a bohemian minimalist spirit shaped by the sea. We design versatile coastal essentials—from soft kimonos and wrap skirts to sun hats and silver rings—intended to move fluidly between landscapes, seasons, and rituals.

As a slow fashion brand, we believe sustainability, social justice, and artistry go hand in hand. We work closely with artisans across Bali and Java, using ethically sourced natural fibres and deadstock fabrics to reduce environmental impact. Our garments are sewn in small batches by a local team of women in Seseh, and our textiles are traditionally woven by hand using manual techniques passed down through generations. By co-creating with artisans in a responsible, transparent way, we honour the skills, stories, and cultural richness behind every piece.

Each piece is made to be lived in and loved—timeless staples that bring a sense of meaning, beauty, and ease to your day. Designed to travel with you across oceans, seasons, and phases of life, these are heirloom essentials crafted not just to be worn, but to be felt. Thoughtful gifts. Personal companions. A quiet kind of luxury you’ll return to again and again.

Our world is shaped by salt, sun, and story. Øy Atelier lives between land and sea—between the soft edge of a wave and the quiet of our studio. This is where our pieces are born—and where your next piece of Øy is ready to begin its story with you.

With love,

Øy
